ABOUT US About Our Project We are a team of dedicated youths who aim to raise funds for O’Joy Care Services, a non-profit organisation whose objective is to help the elderly population in Singapore through a variety of measures, such as counselling for the elderly and educating the public on eldercare and the plight of the elderly. Beautiful Wrinkles is one of the projects under this year's Youth for Causes Project - an annual community service project that funds and supports teams of young social entrepreneurs who embark on fundraising projects to raise money for various non-profit organisations and raise public awareness regarding their cause. More information about the Youth for Causes Project can be accessed at their website. Why help the elderly? When one ages, he weakens emotionally, mentally, financially and physically gradually. Much as we dislike it, ageing an inevitable process which all of us must face. As the aged person’s body condition deteriorates, his physical and mental abilities weaken and therefore, he cannot work and live life the way he did when he was younger. The increased difficulties the aged face poses problems when communicating with the younger generation and therefore, they feel lonely and left out. This causes them to feel depressed and lack of confidence. As Mother Teresa has once said, “The most terrible poverty is loneliness, and the feeling of being unloved.” At such, when the elderly feel isolated, they see little meaning in life. In times like these, what the elderly need is a listening ear whom they can pour their woes onto, which can help sort out their problems, and counselling is the best way to help them. The mass public must also be better informed on how to care for the elderly and the importance of doing so. This is especially important in Singapore, where people aged 65 and above make around 10% of the population, and this figure is increasing rapidly. Due to the problems they face, the elderly are often the most neglected part of the population. Many people find it difficult to cope with or communicate with the aged. However, we strongly believe that we can narrow the gap between the elderly and the younger generation. Thus, public outreach will make up part of our project. Why “Beautiful Wrinkles – A Love Story?” “Beautiful Wrinkles” refers to the countless wrinkles on the skin of the aged person accumulated over time – a sign of the knowledge many and meaningful life experiences the person went through, and these are plus points that should be treasured. “A Love Story” serves as a constant reminder that despite the difficulties faced by the aged members of society, we should continually strive to reach out and shower our love and concern on them. Our Fundraising Activities With the start of the 3rd quarter of the year, we will be carrying out sales of various items within Bowen Secondary School as well as various locations throughout Singapore on Friday afternoons.
